The eBay Hack and What You Need to Know

Password Security

By now, you have probably heard that eBay was hacked recently. There’s even a good chance that you are an eBay user and have been notified about the hack. If you received an email from eBay, it most likely told you that you should change your password to help keep NS0-920
your information protected. And while that is crucial, it certainly isn’t all you need to know.

About the eBay Hack

eBay’s original statement said that a database that contained encrypted passwords had been hacked. However, the company made it clear that no financial data was retrieved during the hack. Because things like credit card information is stored separately from password information, that critical data was protected. The hackers were able to gain access OA0-002 to the encrypted passwords by hacking eBay employee logins. eBay assured it’s users that no unauthorized transactions had been made, but that users should still change their password.

What Information Was Accessed

It’s also important to know that your password wasn’t the only thing that the hackers retrieved. While you might think it was just your password, it was actually more than that. Even though the passwords were encrypted, hackers were still able to access members’ names, email addresses, physical addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth. And with that information, a hacker can do a lot of damage online.

Change Your Password

eBay’s suggestion to change your password is a great place to start. But changing it to something simple isn’t enough. Sure, you need to have a password that is easy to remember, but it also needs to be something that others won’t be able to guess or hack easily. Here are a few tips on creating difficult to hack passwords:

  • Make it at least 8 characters long
  • Don’t us any part of your user name, real name, or company name
  • Don’t use complete words
  • Make it significantly different from previous and other passwords
  • Use  a combination of upper case and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols

If you aren’t sure the password you created is strong enough, then you can type it into How Secure is My Password, and it will tell you how long it would take to hack your password. The web-based app will then give you suggestions on how to make your password stronger.
